Geographic Information Specialist IV

Researches, analyzes, designs, and produces the full range and variety of Geographic Information System (GIS) projects and applications and participates in the design and maintenance of the GIS database; and performs other related duties as required.
 
Distinguishing Characteristics:
 
This class is distinguished by its responsibility to independently research, design and produce the full range and variety of thematic map projects and applications. Work assignments may also include assisting in the supervision and training of lower level staff and/or directing the work of subordinates as it relates to specific projects.

Examples of Duties

  • Manages data entry projects to produce thematic map data and reports using a GIS.
  • Designs and produces thematic map data and applications.
  • Writes computer programs to format data and assists in developing the database for map production.
  • Meets with user department representatives to develop and determine GIS needs.
  • Researches, analyzes and designs GIS projects and applications requiring writing programs to meet user's needs.
  • Manages aerial photograph and remote sensing projects.
  • Enters delineated map and descriptive information into GIS through digitizing, key entry or other standard map data entry procedures.
  • Analyzes and interprets aerial photographs or hard copy maps to delineate elevations, wetlands, vegetation, agricultural land, urban land and other geographic and land use characteristics.
  • Investigates and verifies geographic and land use data by making physical inspections.
